This year Maxis as the developer of Spore game enriched their official website of Spore by adding the API section.

In this section you can develop your own Spore creatures/features like their said at the web site : Here at Maxis, we're working on some features to help the community create their own Spore applications. We're collecting these features into a web-based Spore API. Using simple web services, you can access our huge database of creations and creators. Check out the gallery to see apps made with the Spore API. The documentation section has reference sheets and samples to get you started. If you have questions, feedback, or want to announce your awesome app, head over to the forum.

When we check the gallery , several awesome apps already there such as :

1. Spore Skeletons ( the winner of API contest )
2. Achievement List
3. Spore View ( like wiki )
4. Screen savers, Smiley, iPhone Apps and more.

The forum is also huge. With some topics have more than 10.000 views.

This breakthrough will invite developers to create their own Flash / php / Python / Processing / Mathematics / anything apps utilizing their database of creature creations.
