Fun stuff : Ice skating at Jakarta

As a tropical country, it is difficult to find snow in Indonesia.

But for recreational reason, there are plenty of tourism place with artificial snow all over the country.

The most recent is at Banjarmasin ( the capital city of Borneo ). This snow field is the first at Borneo island. People can experience the artificial village with plenty of ice statue and little hill of snow. The temperature off course set to nearly zero. Which is bring more fun because naturally the climate at Borneo island is high temperature with high humidity.

But you can't skate there ( not yet maybe ). I think the owner of this facility should consider build the skating field to add more fun.

Off course when you are at Jakarta, you can always do ice skating at Taman Anggrek Mall ( Orchid Garden Mall ).

This mall and apartment complex are located near the "Tomang" fly over next to highway exit.

Located at the third level of this huge shopping complex, the skating arena are well known as a " sky rig " and open for public at weekend from 09.00 am to 21.00 pm.

The sky rig are divided to several area.

First is the pre-entry room. You buy ticket here or you can register as a student of skating school. A cabinet full of trophy and other memorabilia from all members of sky rig skating school are stored here.

After you completed the registration, now enter the preparation room. This room is also a waiting room for the class member of skating school before begin their lessons. There is also a cafeteria for refreshment after the exercise. This preparation room connect to two location. First is the skating field itself. Second is the locker area and the skating shoes terminal.

Most of adult and children skating here are using rental skating shoes that you can find at he skating shoes terminal. All size of shoes are prepared here. After found your exact size, you can use the locker to store your valuable while you're skating.

Now go to the field. The field shape is half circle and separated from other area of the mall by visible concerted plastic. There are no roof in this field. Only the roof of the mall that goes to the fifth level. The field is big enough for those of you foreign people who miss ice field back to your home country. Nearly 70 % of people skating here are children and teenager. There is also a special area for the skating school students.

My first daughter last skating experience is almost a year ago. So when we have a chance to skate again, she ask for one hour personal training first by the school teacher.

It will cost extra 5 us dollar. An additional for the first 5 us dollar for renting the skate shoes and two hours of skating time.

But skating is like riding a bicycle. Only half an hour of training, my daughter already set to go and skating all over the field by herself. For me and my second daughter, it is lunch time. Very nice to have a beef burger and soda while watching your daughter skating.
