Work stuff : What Neilsen's say about Indonesia recently ?

Dear blogger ;

A few facts from recent Neilsen's survey recently :

1. Retail sales may grow below 10 % compare to last year.

2. The survey covered 54 top branded grocery products.

3. Last year retail sales hit 94,5 trillion rupiah ( exclude cigarette and non branded products ).

4. Last year was the best growth for retail sales ( 21 Percent ) of the decade.

5. Jan to May 2009 growth hits only 6,5 percent.

7. If it is true the grow is below 10 %, it is the lowest since 2003.

More interesting news from Reuters :

1. Domestic vehicle sales are likely to drop as much as 57 percent in 2009.

2. This mean no more than 425.000 units compare to 607.805 units last year.

And from other source :

1. For F&B sectors, the growth is estimated at 8,6 percent.

2. But not for export sector that fall from 500 million US Dollar to 252 million US Dollar.

3. That is 50 % cut.

4. The sharpest fall is experienced by cooking oil, frozen fish and shrimps.

5. Tea, milk and coffee is more stable than any others products.

Still a hard road to walktrough.

Work stuff : Indonesians spend more despite crisis

Dear blogger ;

An interesting report from Nielsen recently show that Indonesia retail market is growing nearly 7,4 % as April this year from last year. The full report here :

The Indonesian retail market, in the first four months of the year, remains on a positive trajectory as consumers in both modern and traditional markets continue to spend more - regardless of the impact of the financial crisis on the economy.

A survey conducted in seven cities by the Nielsen Company revealed that consumer spending grew by 7.4 percent as of the end of April and is expected to accelerate with the easing of the liquidity crisis.

"The Indonesian retail market is still doing quite well despite the economic crisis," Nielsen executive director for retail, Teguh Yunanto, told reporters in Jakarta on Tuesday.

The survey reveals the retail market, both in modern and traditional sectors, grew consistently from January to April with modern retailing growing by 13.4 percent, while traditional retailing increased by 4.1 percent.

The impact of the crisis in the first four months, however, was clearly present, Teguh said.

The same period last year saw consumers spending grow by 21.9 percent and finish at 20 percent by the end of the year.

"Our country's situation is much better than other countries in Asia," he said.

By the end of this year, he said, consumer goods sales could grow up to 15 percent due to lowering inflation, modern retail expansion and product innovations.

Teguh said urban consumers still managed to purchase slightly more units in their shopping, in rural areas, the overall level of purchasing dropped while the frequency of shopping rose - reflecting new spending patterns.

"At least the growth is still positive and we predict it will improve in the second semester due to seasonal and school holidays," he said.

In addition to the change of consumer behaviour, the survey also found that sales of goods such as shampoo, powdered detergent, baby diapers and skin care products grew significantly in the modern trade sector.

Sales of powdered milk grew by 34.8 percent, while sales of instant noodles grew by 53.4 percent in supermarkets and hypermarkets.

Only branded cooking oil showed signs of a slowdown across the board.

Teguh suspected the movement from branded to non-branded products was a reflection of shifting spending patterns rather than a true contraction in consumption levels.

"Non-branded cooking oil, locally known as minyak curah, continued to be purchased at high rates," Teguh said.

Traditional markets, which make up 80 percent of the market share, benefitted from consumers shifting to cheaper shopping destinations and avoiding unnecessary spending.

The increase in consumer spending, Nielsen said, occurred despite modern retailers making significant cuts to their advertising budgets. January to April, Teguh said, saw retailers's spending on advertising drop by 20 percent to Rp 32 billion (US$3.14 million).

The survey analyzed samples of advertisements for seven daily products: Powdered milk, shampoo, instant noodles, detergent, diapers, skin care products and cooking oil.

The duration of advertisement for cooking oil, powdered milk, shampoo and diapers decreased, while those for powdered detergent and skin care remained stable.

"The duration of cooking oil advertisements, for example, decreased to four weeks from 13 weeks last year," Teguh said.

Only the duration of promotions for instant noodles increased to eight weeks from seven weeks last year, he added.

The survey also revealed that advertisements were dominated by newspapers, which accounted for 79.1 percent of advertising, followed by television and magazines accounting for 13.9 percent and 7 percent respectively.

Work stuff : Fire Drill Layoff , it is true ?

Dear blogger ;

Here is a true story of an urban legend of Fire Drill Layoff in the Company :

A fire alarm in a large office building rang at 3 pm when almost all of 500 employees are at work. As a standard procedure in 3 minute evacuation is done and all the employees gathered outside.

Nothing happened for 10 minutes, so there is no evidence of fire.

And then the drama begins, the firm Security Officer made an announcement :

" Dear employees , with melting heart I had to announced that for many of you this is the last fire evacuation drill. Due to recession, the company had to lay off almost fifty percent of the staff. When you move back to the building, some of you will discover that your swipe pas card is no longer active to give you access to your office desk. If you're among them those laid off, go home and your belongings and other paper work regarding this laid off will be couriered to your home tomorrow. Hope you have a nice career a head. Please move forward and try to swipe your card"

Do you believe it ? This tale made it Internet debut around February 2009. But many believed that the story already took place at Houston Texas around the year of 1994. With current Labor Laws, is hard to believe that the above event could happen. Paper work and Compensation Money is a few things that the company had to settled down before laid off their employees.

But another fact keep recorded. Including the event at Hexham UK ( May 2007 ) and at California ( October 1988 ). Although not as straight as the story above, the 2 events had some similarity with the Fire Drill Layoff. Maybe you can share your knowledge about it ?

Work stuff : Laugh at work...

Dear blogger ;

Monday again , working again. A lot of people don't like Monday, because the " feeling of holiday " is still on the air. Also because it is the first day of the week. Means : meeting for this week programs and evaluation for the last week results. One good advice for this Monday is to laugh.

Laughter is now being studied for its medicinal effects on people. It has been observed that laughter has so many varied effects on people of all ages, status, or affiliations. It lightens up an otherwise problematic day. It brightens a melancholic feeling. It improves heart functioning. It reduces stress. It has the power to heal relationships and surely is great for mental outlook. Because of its many health benefits, laughter can indirectly help manage any form of pain and may hasten recovery from disease or injury. “Laughter is the best medicine” - to this very day - continues to be a well known saying.

It's really very difficult to force a laugh while going through a stressful situation. However, that's the best time when one needs to laugh the fullest and the most. Let us bear in mind that the formula is to be in control over your environment or situation. Start by trying to elicit laughter in the worst of situations. Make yourself laugh! When you reach the point of absurdity, you can then begin to melt and calm. Then, you’ll start finding solutions to your problems! Laugh out loud! Remember another saying: “Practice makes perfect”!

Work stuff : Honesty Store...a massive project to end corruption

Dear blogger ;

Corruption is one shameful act that affect almost all aspect in our community. Even get worst when corruption is widely accept as a common act. From government employee, law enforcement, to members of senate or congress.

My country had suffered a bad economic condition due to this act. With such enormous amount of natural resources such as petrol, coal, gas, palm oil, rubber, etc , Indonesia still leading the numbers of poor families and noneducational people in South East Asia.

Today government work hard to punished everyone involved in this practice. Also to grab back the money / assets they corrupted and use it for the people need. But to eliminated the corruption from the root, we need to teach our younger people that corruption is a shameful act. Corruption is killing other people slowly. Corruption must stop.

For this purpose, government had spread many " Honesty Store " all over the nation. A lot of them is placed at High School as a part of Anti Corruption Campaign. In this " Honesty Store " there are no Storekeeper or Surveillance's Camera. Just a box of display made from glass. In this box you can find some items that use to be sold at the regular school store. Such as pencils, candies, erasers, snacks, bottled water or milk, etc. Each item store in different little box with a price list on it. For payment, you will find a special box in the middle of the items. In this box you shall place your money for the item you buy. If you need a change, you can take it also from this box. Nobody will help you. Help your self...

After practising this " Honesty Store " for almost six months, we will proceed to see the results. Some store like at Public High School no 3 Jakarta ( SMAN 3 Jakarta ) gain a success. No more than 3 US Dollar deficit for each month. And the sales growth from 20 US Dollar to approx 100 US Dollar each month.

But not for the SMAN 6 Jakarta. The deficit reach approx 30 US Dollar each month. Teacher of SMAN 6 admit that to teach young people need patience and lot of understanding. But we are getting progress each month.

For now there are almost 2.800 " Honesty Store " across Indonesia. Hopefully this act can help us eliminated the corruption act once and for all.

Fun stuff : Finally there are 100 postings in this blog

Dear blogger ;

Thank you for your kind attention to read my blog that start from 8 August 2008 ( the day the summer Olympics of Beijing is begun ) until today.

In that 6 months, a total 100 postings has been made. This posting is the 100's. For me the hardest part to write a posting is to find the time. During work hours, very limited time can be taken to write something. Back to home, my three daughters need more attention than ever until they are all gone to sleep. So, my spare time is at night when all my daughters are sleeping. Usually I read the topics first without connected to the Internet. Latter that night i will post it, or tomorrow first thing in the morning at my office before office hour. I usually arrived at work half an hour before office hour begin.

The next thing is to find the topics. As my interest is at travelling, gaming and clubbing i try to post things related to it. But often I stumble upon some interesting that I think worth to share it via my blog. So in the last 2 months, my posting come in generally everything that interesting. This is my weakness. I will try to work it form now.

Another thing is the temptation to move my blog to word press. Although I'm fine with blogger, i have read that word press give you extra creativity than blogger. If not transferring my blog to word press, maybe I read another harder topic at my new blog on word press.

Wish me luck guys. You critics and opinions is very essential to me. Please let me now.

Fun stuff : Blogging is for everybody...

Yes, blogging is for everybody. Even in the People's Republic of China that democracy is still a luxury.

Mao Xinyu, a 38-year-old senior colonel in China’s People’s Liberation Army is also a blogger. He’s not just any blogger - his blog, which is all about Chairman Mao, was voted most popular by the readers of People’s Daily last year. Xinyu is the grandson of Chairman Mao. The founding father of communist china.

Mao's blog is dedicated to an appreciation of his grandfather, who died when he was six years old. The founder of communist China is still admired by many people here- despite the fact that millions died because of famine and conflict during his rule.

Mao Xinyu's resemblance to his grandfather means that he tends to get stopped whenever he goes out in public. Last March, he's try to make his way to a political conference at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, held just a few metres away from his grandfather's mausoleum. Grandson Mao had to stop every few steps to pose for pictures with delighted Chairman Mao fans.

Too bad his blog is not yet translate to English. We will waiting Mao, for you to share your blog to everybody in the world.

Work stuff : New year, new career tracks.....

Dear blogger ;

Switching career ? It is not that hard. Many people also thinking of switching their career. The main reason probably is unhappiness in the current job. But there are also other reasons. Maybe you’ve discovered that your real passion lies elsewhere. Maybe you find that your current job doesn’t give you a sense of personal achievement or satisfaction. Or maybe you want a less stressful job so you can take better care of your family.

What ever your reasons are, don't get it carelessly. Career is like married. You can fail the first, but better not the second. Here is some good advice :

1. Be closer to the current job.

Different industry maybe need a totally different skills. Why not try to explore your own company/organization. Look for different field or tasks. Learn new things but still in the culture you are already familiar.

2. Go back to school.

Before switching, get a necessary skills/ knowledge for your future job is essential. Go back to school is not that bad. Many " open " courses with a flexible time for worker like you. With new diploma or even a degree, a new door of hope is opened.

3. Be truth to yourself.

Is the new career necessary ? Or is just an eruption of emotion ? If it necessary, let's prepare the safety net. Just in case the new one is not meet your expectation. Take a look at your savings and also your bills. Go carefully with that. For how long you can " hold your breath " until your new career finally harvest ? Get a deep discussion with your family and your close friends.

Conclusion : switching career may seems like a horror decision. But if you are fully ready for it, a new bright future may waiting for you.

Work stuff : Salary Negotiation - How you do it ?

Dear blogger ;

For most worker, salary negotiation is a risky activity. Come to worst when you find a new job that better than your current job you but the company is not big enough as your previous one. Here is some good advice from Jobsdb :

In the recruitment process, money is always the most sensitive of issues. Discussion of salary causes anxiety on both sides of the table. Even though you may be uncomfortable negotiating, it is always best to try. Remember, if you don't negotiate, you don't only lose money on your initial salary, but also on every year's salary thereafter. However, good negotiation skill can help create the impression that you are a formidable and valued individual, which will assist your status throughout your career.

Never discuss salary until a good fit between you and the organization has been established. If salary questions come up early in an interview, try to defer the discussion. "I'm confident we can reach an agreement on pay and benefits, but first I would like to get more information on the job responsibilities."

Never give your salary history. If you are asked for salary history, try to avoid putting yourself at a disadvantage in future negotiations. If your previous salary was confidential, simply advise the interviewer that you prefer not to breach that confidentiality.

Focus on your worth not your need. If asked, "What salary do you need," structure your answer to focus on you wish to be paid based on the strengths and value you bring to the company.

Use the word "modest". If the salary offer is low, a diplomatic way to object is to refer to the offer as modest. "Based on the strengths and experience I bring to this position, the offer seems modest."

Don't jump at the first figure. No matter how high the offer, you may be able to do better. A silent pause can be an effective way to get a better offer.

Know with whom you are negotiating. This person may be the messenger but not the decision-maker.

Ask for 24 - 48 hours to decide. Don't allow yourself to be pressured for a decision. It is usually best to discuss any offer with a significant other, and then to sleep on it.

Prepare with research. The Labour Department and various professional organizations publish salary index that are available online.

Never negotiate benefits in lieu of salary. Get the salary set first. Do not allow perks and benefits to substitute for money.

If you accept a lower figure, ask for an early performance review. Establish clear criteria; with built-in pay raises based on accomplishments.

Happy negotiating...

Work stuff : MBA the new requirement in carrier

Dear blogger ;

Education is no doubt had a very close relationship to career success. Specially in the technical field and special job at the special environment. As the education standard is growing, MBA tittle become a new requirement for key job.

In North America ( the largest market for MBA ) the booming is continued. Maryana Ayerbe of Merrill Lynch USA says, “We are increasing our hiring from MBA programs because MBAs bring in the new talent and energy that the business needs to grow.”

Debbie Sehulster of Ingersoll Rand USA says, “We have been able to improve our leadership strength over the years by bringing in a handful of MBAs each year. We have a rigorous hiring process and have been successful in recruiting and retaining high calibre talent that in the long term becomes high performing and high potential leaders in our organization. MBAs bring us greater business acumen than undergraduate students.”

Not to be different in Europe, Middle East and Africa. Usha Kakaria-Cayaux of Nike Netherlands says, “We look for MBAs for their learning agility, international experience, a conscious decision to evolve, interest in continual learning and broad management exposure.” In Central Europe, the MBA is less prominent. Good Czech or Hungarian candidates are highly sought after, but mainly outside their home country. Russia is the only Eastern European market with a large and growing domestic demand for MBAs. By contrast, MBA demand in Africa is subdued. “Salary is a big barrier for African employers.”

Asia markets is even better. Philip Cho of Lehman Brothers Singapore says, “We tend to focus less on academic or technical skills, and place emphasis more on communication, interpersonal skills and leadership traits.” This tell us that asia markets demand more than a tittle. Strong interpersonal skills, as well as a good understanding of marketing, finance, or strategic planning is a key issues to completed your MBA's.

China is the hottest market. "More and more MBAs are joining Chinese companies from international MBA programs and Asian MBA programs," says Michael Yang, General Marketing Manager, Motorola (China). "I think the attraction for these MBAs is not the starting salary, but the growing opportunity. For example, the average MBA salary growth rate is higher than 15% per year in China."

Australia employers in the other hand are more carefully to the MBA boom. The same way to Latin America. Most MBA graduates choosing to study and work in Europe or North America. Salary also remains a big issue.

With this global fact, MBA is one of the essential key to enter the worldwide companies. Together with other soft skills, you can develop your Carrier in the nice environment.

Work stuff : Work and humor do mix...

This is a Robert Half International point of view about work and humor :

Q : Why is a good sense of humor important in the workplace ?

A : 1. Having a good sense of humor makes you more likeable and will enable you to build rapport and trust with managers, colleagues and clients more easily.

2. Maintaining a sense of humor during difficult times can help ease the stress
of those situations. This allows people to keep a sense of perspective and
focus on what they need to do to accomplish their goals.

Q : What are some things to avoid regarding to humor?

A : 1. Humor must be low-key, even understated, and should never be used at
inappropriate times or to demean someone. Never make another person the
target of a joke, and never make jokes about race, gender, sex, age, national
origin, religion and disabilities.

2. Stay away from sarcasm, which can be viewed as a subtle way to insult
other people.

3. Don’t make light of mistakes. Instead, acknowledge them, correct them,
and maintain the proper perspective for you and your staff.

Q : How do you know if you’ve gone too far in trying to be funny?

A : 1. There are obvious signs, such as a visible display of emotion or a
deterioration of relationships.

2. More subtly, you could see a drop in productivity if people no longer trust
you or are as motivated by you.

Q :
How can you improve your sense of humor?

A : 1. You can show you have a good sense of humor without ever saying a word.
Be willing to laugh at yourself and acknowledge the humor of others.
Showing you can take a joke, or even poke one at yourself, can go a long way
toward showing your lighter side.

2. Tailor your approach to each individual. For example, you could share a
light-hearted article with someone having a bad day or discuss a funny
episode of a TV show with a colleague you know watches the same program.

Work stuff : Tobacco industries in Indonesia next year goverment policy

Dear blogger ;

Talking about smoking again.

Next year our government planned to raise the tax for tobacco product about 6 - 7 percent from current tariff. This policy is aimed to increase income from custom tax. Since the tax from tobacco product is still dominating the total tax from custom. Next year the government aim to get approx 50 trillion rupiah from custom taxes. A total of 48 trillion come from tobacco product.

It s easy to see now, that the government is still need a lot of taxes money from tobacco industries.

Although the production will decrease due to high tax rate, but the income still maintain because law enforcements is doing their job. Illegal tobaccos factory will always targeted by police and local government. This kind of factory often didn't pay the taxes at all. And no standard of good production procedure applied.

Some factory also cheated the law by paying the amount lesser than they had to pay. This kind factory also being targeted by the local authority.

The government stated that the plan for next year is to decrease the production but increase the tax. So the income still on track, but hoping that people that buy tobacco product is come from the better economic status and had a higher sense of health.

Indonesia is know the third biggest country which consume tobacco product. With causes by tobacco related illness is nearly death400 thousand people in a year. A surprising fact that poor family using average of 12 % of their daily income for smoking. Sad....

Work stuff : Handling Modern Market fo FMCG Company in Indonesia ( part two )

Dear blogger ; In this first chapter, we talk about dividing our modern market into 4 segment.

I also mention about the importance of this strategy for company with brand management strategy. Many books or expert opinion regarding what is brand management.

One definition that usually our team use , that brand management are :
1
. CREATING PROMISES.
2. MAKING THAT PROMISES TO THE COSTUMER.
3. KEEPING THAT PROMISES BY MANAGING CAPABILITIES.

Linking this definition to the old jargon about 4-P and what is modern market in today definition, we found something interesting which is :

RETAILER IS A PLACE WHERE PRODUCT, PRICE, PROMOTION AND PLACE COME TOGETHER. A BRAND MANAGER CAN MAKE AND KEEP PROMISES FOR THEIR BRAND HERE.
Slide 5

Yes, modern market is all in one place. You can display your product. Set special price. Doing promotion with almost all kind of material and system. With more and more people doing their shopping in this channel. And mix this shopping habit with family recreation has made managing brand in this channel is extremely important.

But competition is also fierce here. THE GROWTH OF SHELF SPACE CANNOT CATCH THE GROWTH OF NEW SKU'S ( STOCK KEEPING UNIT'S ) OR NEW BRAND. This battle for better shelf space and better promotion is on.

To help winning the battle, we stumble to this three method that can be use individually or mix together to create a big impact :

1. BE A CATEGORY CAPTAIN.
Is your brand is a leader at it's category. Perhaps the runner up ? If it does, than you will earn much better shelf space to help you explore promotion tools.

2. GOOD RELATIONSHIP AT THE STORE LEVEL.

If your brand is not the top three at it's category, it is time to play with good will and human relationship. Make sure all your team had a very good relationship with every people at modern store that involve to your brands. In country like Indonesia, human touch still play an important role in business. With this, your brand can steal the opportunity to win the battle for better shelf space.

3. GOOD MERCHANDISING
You can also optimize your merchandising team. Specially when you have a large range of SKU's ( Stock Keeping Units ). You can also mix it with SPG team to help costumer when buying your products.

With these three strategies, your company will stand a better chance to winning the battle.

Tobacco Industries in Indonesia : figures ( part two )

Dear blogger ;

After looking in general for tobacco industries at the part one post, now we want to take a look closer to one of big five tobacco company in Indonesia.

This company, let's said it " company " is well known in Indonesia. It has branch office almost at all over this country. The product range is also very wide from the clove cigarettes ( SKT ), filtered cigarettes ( SKM ) to advanced filtered cigarettes ( SPM ).

At the year of 2006 this company earn net profit of Rp 145,5 milyar ( 145,5 billion rupiah 0r 14,55 million US dollar approx ). From this net profit, 30 % goes to the stake holder as a deviden ( Rp 45 billion rupiah ).

This net profit is up 35 % from the year of 2005. From this growth, each stocks earn a dividen Rp 7,5 / one piece or Rp 750 ,- / lot. This net profit come from net income which hit the number of 3 trillion rupiah at 2006.

For the year of 2008 in this first quartal ( Jan to April ) the net income has reach 1,3 trillion rupiah with the sales volume of 4 billion sticks at all categories. Comparet to the first quartal of 2007 the gross profit up more than 7 %. But the net profit is down due the payment of obligation interests that needed to support the company expansion.

From this sample figures, we can guess how big is this industry at how important it roles for Indonesia's economic. The taxes for example is one of the biggest contribution for the government income. The labour is the other things that also greatly contributed by this industry. You can find many " tobacco home industries " all over the central and east java. Not to mention other industry ( raw material, advertising, distribution , etc ) that effect by tobacco industries.

But the negative impacts are also high. The percentage of early age smoker is growth every year. Also the tobacco related illness that also growth and spread widely. The MUI ( Majelis Ulama Indonesia ) or Indonesia High Council of Moslem's Religionist also prepared to banned the smoking habit as " haram " of prohibited by Islam.

Many opinion come from expert regarding this matters. What is yours ?

Work stuff : Handling Modern Market for FMCG Company in Indonesia ( Part One )

Dear blogger ;

Nowadays, Modern Market is growing fast to replace the Traditional Market.
Beside the Modern Market Environment is much - much better than Traditional Market,
the price that usually lower at Traditional Market : now you can find in the same level at the Modern Market.

Also the Modern Market now move closer to Residential Area, give people easy access to shop.
With a long operational hour ( sometimes more than 12 hours a day, even 24 hours like Seven Eleven and Circle K ), Modern Market has an advantage of security if you shop late or if you are not male.

This trend also effect the FMCG Company in Indonesia. For foreign Industry that had experience outside Indonesia's market, dealing with Modern Market probably not at complicated as local company felt.

Also the fact that global player in Modern Market now entering Indonesia aggressively made handling modern market more difficult. They have good system and capable human resources to penetrate the market. With so many people and good economic growth, Indonesia now is a major target market at south east Asia.

In this series of posting, I would like to share knowledge regarding above matters. I also want to invite everybody with the same interest to share their knowledge too. The knowledge I'll share came from both experience and training. Also some materials from the Internet that I read.

1. What type of each Retailer to your company.

From now, we will refer Modern Market Player as a Retailer. And the company that supply it as a Supplier.
First, let's see the supplier. In this modern age most of supplier applied the brand management strategy. Except if you are at commodity / non brand supplier or a home industry, brand management strategy is a key to become a key player at your industry.

Let's assume that the supplier do applied the brand management strategy.
Now we can go the next step and look to retailer around us.
So many of them .... From the small one like Indomaret, Alfamart, Circle K, Seven Eleven.
The medium one like Hero, Ramayana, Naga, Superindo, Yogya.
To the big one like Giant, Carrefour, Hypermart, Indogrosir etc.
We should treat each one of them differently.
We can divided them to four category like below :

1. JUST ACCOUNT

Just Account is a retailer that your company decided had a low level of importance to your company product port folio. And your survey find out that those retailer also had a low level of interest to your company or your product. Some aspect may consider here. Including type of store, type of shopper, your brand management strategy, retailer plan for the next 3 - 10 years and others.

2. FOCUS ACCOUNT

Focus Account is an account your company decided as an important retailer that can support your brand management strategy. But for them, your company is a not an important supplier. Maybe because no memorandum of understanding had been made between the two of you. Or you see that in the long term, this retailer can be very useful your product port folio.

3. MAINTAIN ACCOUNT

This is another type of account for you. The retailer consider your company as an important supplier. Because all your product is a fast moving SKU at their store. But your brand management strategy found that this type of retailer will not support your product port folio at the medium or long term.

4. KEY ACCOUNT

In this last type, both of you find that each of you are important to other. Important today and important for a long term.

Analyze each of your retailer as a group or individual and decide what kind of account they are for your company. Involving brand team, trade marketing team and key account team is crucial in this step. Also don't decide anything unless you have visited their stores and had a preview meeting with their merchandising/ buyer team.

See you again at the next posting...

Work stuff : CBHRM- Employee Selection Step 8

Dear blogger ;

Welcome back to the CBHRM file - employee selection.
As you remember, we have finished seven step of employee selection.
The first seven step are involving internal system and data.
We have not yet touch any outside data which came from our candidate out there.

Now at the eight step, we will begin to work with the candidate.
This step often define as IDENTIFY POTENTIAL CANDIDATES FROM THE " PRE ENTRY SHORT LISTS ".
The pre entry short lists it self is identify at the step 3 of the CBHRM - Employee selection.

In this step, we work with the short list we already made.
Look at the candidates curriculum's vitae deeply.
The usual first step is the work experiencing.
Find similarity with the position we offer.
This consist job and industry, also the size of the company.
Search for additional information regarding the candidate at the previous company.
But do not made a verification phone call unless you call the candidate first.

After satisfy with the work experience, the education and other information is our next concern.
Decide if the candidate education support his/her work, or he/she is a self learning people?
Also notice other additional education/courses he/she finished to support the job.
Achievement regarding education or work is also important to consider.

The last is the personal information.
For some job, the age and gender sometimes play an important roles.
Candidate marital status also may effect some " out of hometown " placement.

Don't rush at any of this three step.
Keep in mind that your are looking for the one who will work at least 5 - 10 years at your company.
It is our responsibility as an employer to give the candidate the best position and also to our company for not to chose the wrong people.

Work stuff : CBHRM - Employee Selection step 7

Dear blogger ;

Back to Employee Selection Story.
It's now time to the seventh step.
The step call : IDENTIFY ROOM FOR GROWTH IN THE POSITION AT ENTRY.

After we complete the list of core and sub competencies and set the minimum acceptable performance, now we need to think about the future.

Although in this turbulence economic situation it is hard to predict the future, at least for 3 - 5 years ahead the company must have a midterm planning.
All department head must aware this midterm planning as important as the short term one.
The board of director have a responsibility to share this information as complete as possible.

With this midterm planning, set the room for growth at the competencies table.
Growth from education, task performance, or technical performance.

For example, opening e-mail from p.c is ordinary task today.
But for 3 - 5 years ahead, opening it from mobile phone can be a daily routine.
Prepare your job description for something like this one.
Including new machine, new techniques and new field task.
Link it with current condition and company training program.

If we do that, we can assure the person we hire now can help us we situation change.

Work stuff : Career goals in 2008 for the Philippinos

Dear blogger ;

What is your career goals ? Get your dream job ? Saving to do own business later ?
I bumped in to a survey done by JobsDB and find an interesting fact regarding career goals.
This survey take place in Philippine and placed at JobsDB website front page.

45 % percent of people choose that GET YOUR DREAM JOB as their career goal.
Each employee had they own dream job. So I personally think this 45 % share is relevant.

Surprisingly that 27 % choose WORK AND LIVE IN OTHER COUNTRY as their goal.
From my experience in Indonesia, very few of my coworkers or friends had this goal.
What is the driven factor ? Since I've been told that the average salary their is high enough.
Or maybe Singapore or Hongkong can give better live and work environment ?
For that , you can dig in to the report and give your own opinion.

13 % work to became boss . To gather experience and resources that needed to open own business. Also to build the network that needed to sign up a business.

The rest 16 % divided into 4 goals including get promoted, get master's degree, succeed in freelancing and retired with a lot of money.

Interesting isn't it ?

Now, what is your goals ?
